Simple: When you want to attract Blue Jays, Cardinals, Doves, or other larger, robust birds, a platform feeder is for you!
There are some distinct advantages to platform feeders – they are popular among the brightest and brassiest of backyard birds. Platform feeders are quite easy to hang and are by far the easiest to refill.
However, there are also some challenges to look out for. Unless the platform has a vent/screen, bird droppings can turn great seed into soiled (and uneaten) seed. Unless specifically constructed, a platform feeder may not offer protection from the weather – leading to un-drained seed growing bacteria or fungi which can make the birds sick.
A lot to think about? Absolutely! Selecting a feeder for your backyard bird sanctuary takes the same careful consideration that choosing plants and other ornamentals for your backyard takes.
The great news is I Can Help! Below, you will find several platform feeders with pictures, prices, pros, and cons with each of the feeders. You will also find links to the feeders in case you decide you want to add the feeder to your backyard bird sanctuary! (The picture and the title descriptions will provide additional information and allow you to place an order if you would like).
My Top 3 Feeders:
Birds: Blue Jays, BlueBirds, Cardinals, Sparrows
Materials/Size: 12 x 4-3/4 x 2 inches, Pine
This durable pine window feeder has 4 very strong suction cups to adhere the platform to the window. It attracts a wide variety of birds for up close viewing. It holds approximately 1 lb of seed and/or nuts.
PROS: This is a very strong window feeder. It has a mesh tray bottom so the seed does not become soggy. The mesh also allows for bird droppings to easily pass through. It is washable when soiled. Window feeders allow for up close viewing when feeding.
CONS: I am personally not a fan of window feeders unless you also have the window-bird proof decals so that birds do not harm them self when flying in for the food. It takes a long time for birds to trust window feeders – especially when the feeders are close to busy bodies. I find that window feeders are best where little bodies can’t tap on the window and scare the birds away.
Birds: Blue Jays, BlueBirds, Cardinals, Sparrows, Finches, Doves
Materials/Size: Recycled Plastic Wood, Inner seed tray dimensions are 5-1/2 x 7 inches. Mounts on a 4 inch or a 6 inch deck rail. Overall dimensions are 8 x 9 x 12 inches tall.
This is a unique platform feeder that is perfect for railings and patios! It fits over most deck railings giving you easy access for both filling the feeder and watching the birds visiting. Installation is very quick – simply attach the tray to your deck railing through one pre-drilled hole.
PROS: This is a two in one feeder – if you don’t like the feeder on the porch or need to move it, it sits very nicely on the ground or a table. It is a perfect fit for small backyard bird sanctuaries! The set up is very easy and there is a clear dome that protects the seed from the elements. The clear dome also provides bird watching even in the nastiest weather! Another bonus… it is made of recycled plastic (made to look like wood) so it is Eco Friendly!
CONS: This is a great feeder if you are going to put seed out on a regular basis. Due to the construction (sitting on a post), it does not have drainage holes, so the seed needs to be replenished and the birdhouse washed every few weeks. Because of the ease of set up, washing does not take a long time!
Price: $124.99 ($99.99 On Sale)
Birds: Blue Jays, BlueBirds, Cardinals, Sparrows, Finches, Doves, SongBirds
Materials/Size: Flower box top is 2-1/2 inches deep. Feeder measures 8-1/4 x 6-1/4 x 11-1/2.
This covered platform feeder is my favorite because of the high-quality recycled plastic specifically designed to add beautiful, bird friendly flowers on top. Plant your choice of flowers–the recycled plastic will never warp, fade or crack, no matter how many times you water! My birds LOVE this feeder because it not only shades them from the sun but also provides flowers (nectar) that attracts a wide variety of birds… including hummingbirds!!!
The covering helps protect them when it is raining and the platform is wide so that my larger birds are comfortable standing on it. It is a little more expensive than other brands, but well worth the cost!
PROS: This platform feeder is made of durable, recycled plastic that will not warp or fade. It has a pole mount so that it can be a stand alone – apart from some of the smaller, more delicate birds (like gold finches). I love the 2 for 1 with having a planter AND bird feeder!!!
CONS: The pole is not included. However, I rarely use poles that are included in bird feeders, as I have discovered that hardware stores can custom cut my poles to the desired height – it makes for contract in my backyard sanctuary!
